TSA Updates You Need to Know: Food and Powders

TSA updated their regulations regarding powders and food in carry-on luggage. Will you make it through your next screening without being stopped?

Even the most novice of travelers are aware of TSA’s regulations pertaining to carry-on luggage. Nowadays it’s hard to find anyone who is unfamiliar with TSA’s rules for carrying liquids, gels, aerosols, and creams through security. You know, the 3-1-1 rule: 3.4 ounces, 1-quart bag, 1 bag per person. But did you know TSA has begun to enforce additional regulations on powders and food? Before you toss the protein powder and trail mix into your bag, here’s a few tips to make your security screening process as smooth as possible.

TSA Regulation Updates

• The April 2018 TSA regulation update requires all powders and food be removed from carry-on bags when going through security.

• Food must be removed due to dense snacks causing blind spots during bag screenings.

• “Powder” refers to any powder substance: coffee, cosmetics, protein, spices, baby powder, etc.

• Per TSA’s website, powder substances over 12 ounces must be placed in a separate bin.

• If traveling internationally, powders could potentially undergo extra scrutiny. If the TSA agent isn’t able to easily identify it, it could be discarded.

• Spare yourself the hassle; if you’re traveling with more than 12 ounces of powder, check it.

Exceptions

As always, exceptions apply. For example, if you’re traveling with prescription medication or baby formula you may exceed the specified amount but must notify the TSA agent and may potentially be subjected to additional screenings. TSA pre-check members are not required to remove these items from their bags.

Upcoming Technology Updates

Going through TSA security checks can be a daunting task but there may be relief in sight. TSA has rolled out plan for a new 3-D X-ray machine. The intent of this new technology is to reduce the number of bag scans and potentially eliminate the need to remove electronics, liquids, powders, and food from carry-on luggage. TSA is currently testing the new state-of-the-art scanners at select U.S. airport, with a plan to have more than 145 scanners in airports nationwide by the end of September 2019.

There’s the potential for regulation changes on the horizon, but for now, continue to follow the rules you always have, and remember you can still bring powders and enough snacks to last you a week on a deserted island through security (don’t act like I’m the only one who brings way more snacks than necessary). Just be prepared for a few extra steps!
